Ja'Nell Henry is a proud native of Durham, North Carolina, deeply connected to the rich history of Stagville and the surrounding plantations through her ancestors bearing the names Harris, Parker, Riley, Mangum, McMannen, and more. As the Co-Founder of Black August in the Park and the Black Farmers' Market, Ja'Nell leverages her decade-long expertise in event planning to create impactful corporate events by day and transformative community events by night.
A graduate of Guilford College with a BA in Spanish and Business, Ja'Nell's journey of discovery about her ancestral ties to Stagville came as an adult, despite growing up in the Durham County school system and visiting numerous historic sites on school trips. Since uncovering this significant part of her heritage, she has passionately dedicated herself to raising awareness about Stagville's history. Ja'Nell's commitment to preserving and sharing this legacy is evident in her role on the Stagville Descendants Council Board, where she serves as the Executive Secretary. Through her work, she continues to honor her ancestors and enrich her community by connecting them with their shared history.
